Impaired driver speeds off from DWI checkpoint, arrested for…DWI!

Driver commits DWI while speeding off from DWI checkpoint

AIKEN — A man who is of legal drinking age was arrested by city deputies just milliseconds after speeding off from a DWI checkpoint, a checkpoint that he was required to complete.

"Checkpoints are designed as a deterrent and as an enforcement measure," said Lt. Jake Mahoney with Aiken Department of Public Safety.

Dillon Dennis, 21, of Aiken, led Aiken Department of Public Safety deputies on a brief chase before he was taken down.

Mr. Dennis is now charged with DWI, failure to stop for blue lights, and evasion.

While the number of fatal DWI crashes were down statewide, there was an increase locally, including in Barnwell County.

Mayors sit down with three council members to discuss handover of county property

BARNWELL — The mayors of the three largest cities in Barnwell County were called into a meeting by three of the county's council members to discuss handing over the properties from the now-defunct Barnwell County Economic Development Commission to the respective cities.

Barnwell mayor Ed Lemon, Blackville mayor Mike Beasley, and former EDC member and current Williston mayor Jason Stapleton all sat down with council members Keith Sloan and David Kenner and County Council Chairman Freddie Houston to discuss the handover of the property to the three cities.

After opening the meeting, the group went into closed session to discuss "pre-litigation matters related to the donation of property."

After the meeting, Chairman Houston said they were trying to get on the same wavelength.

Asked if the situation will be able to be settled outside of the courtroom, Chairman Houston said he thinks so.

County council called a special-called meeting this morning to discuss potential proposals to get back the property, money and other assets the EDC gave up.  The EDC was dissolved on December 20, 2013 and is being investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
