County's Economic Development Commission board dissolved after 27 years in special council vote

EDC dissolved after vote

BARNWELL — After 27 years, the Barnwell County Council decided that its Economic Development Council is no more.

On Friday, the council purged the EDC of all of its current members after an investigation revealed that the EDC gave illicit donations to others.  The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is also investigating.

The EDC had Jason Stapleton, the new mayor of Williston, as part of its board.  Stapleton resigned from the board immediately after he was sworn in as the mayor of Williston due to the dual office holding issue, which (coincidentially) Barnwell County was found guilty of in regards to the hospital issue during the summer.
