ASHEBORO — A man was arrested for killing and burning his elderly wife to death.

A 67-year-old woman was found dead of one gunshot wound inside the home, the Randolph County Sheriff's Department said.

Officers had responded to a check welfare call at the home around 12:40 a.m. and also discovered that gas and burners on the stove had been turned on.

Investigators left the scene around 7:30 a.m. but returned only 50 minutes later, when a fire was reported at the same home. Officers found nobody inside the burning home.

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) helped the Randolph County Sheriff's Department with the arson.

The Randolph County Sheriff's Department is the lone investigator of the murder.

Joseph Levi G., 44, was charged with murder and illegally burning a dwelling following several bizarre hours at the couple's home on WOODFERN RD. That's near Woodfern Baptist Church in rural southeastern Randolph County.  He is at the Randolph County Jail in Asheboro.
